Creating a Culture of Compassion and Inclusion

Creating a culture of compassion and inclusion for everyone at our schools--students, administrators, teachers, support staff and parents--is a foundational value at LESD. We take pride in being kind to one another and in appreciating the qualities in each of us that make us unique. Differences in cultures, experiences and perspectives are assets that enrich our school communities. This month I would like to highlight how Jane Addams Middle School, known simply as JAMS, is setting the standard on creating a positive and compassionate school culture.

JAMS recently partnered with WE Schools and the NFL to participate in the “Huddle for Good”, which inspires people to make meaningful and lasting contributions to their communities. The JAMS Leadership class planned a “homeless care package” drive. They created public service announcements, presentations, and the Bengal News spread the word out about their cause. JAMS students created 300 homeless care packages by contributing over 10,000 volunteer minutes in just one day! The care packages were delivered to homeless individuals in Skid Row.

In addition, JAMS was recognized as a recipient of the Sandy Hook Promise “Start with Hello Week Award”. Sandy Hook Promise is a school violence prevention organization, and along with the “Start with Hello” campaign, supports school efforts to prevent bullying and violence. JAMS was selected from hundreds of submissions across the country. The Start With Hello program is designed to help students break the ice, overcome social barriers, and get to know one another in order to create and sustain an inclusive culture and school community.

Teaching our students empathy and compassion helps develop model citizens who will carry on these values to future generations.  At LESD we proudly support programs and partnerships that will ensure that all schools are supportive safe havens for our children and our community.

Lawndale, CA – VPLS, a premier technology solutions provider, announced that it has completed a next generation wireless upgrade for Lawndale Elementary School District.  The wireless upgrade included a full replacement of all indoor access points at nine school campuses and the district office, plus the addition of outdoor wireless access points.  The implementation of the next generation wireless network by VPLS furthers the District’s Technology Services mission of delivering customer-focused technical support and services to all schools and district departments.  It also provides a platform for providing optimal wireless coverage for critical student and teacher applications with the focus on increasing academic achievement.

The VPLS design for Lawndale ESD includes Ruckus R720 access points for most classrooms, with Ruckus R730 access points for indoor areas with higher expected wireless device density.  Ruckus T710s were used for outdoor coverage.  The Ruckus 700 series products offer improvements on both coverage and performance from the District’s previous wireless platform, while meeting the District’s budgetary objectives.  VPLS also included wireless site surveys to ensure optimal performance.

"Throughout our wireless upgrade project, VPLS provided excellent onsite support from the initial receipt, tagging and configuration of equipment, to the deployment and testing of all new devices,” said Todd Barker, Director of Information Technology for Lawndale Elementary School District.  “Because of the careful design and deployment process, we expect the system to provide our students and staff with excellent wireless service into the foreseeable future."

VPLS also assisted the District by working with Universal Service Administrative Co. (USAC) to secure the majority of the funding for the project via the federal E-rate initiative.  VPLS’s successful deployment is the latest in a series of successful engagements with school districts in Los Angeles’s South Bay.

Jane Addams Middle School values inclusion, empathy and fostering a safe and positive school culture.

They were recognized as one of this year’s recipients of the Sandy Hook Promise “Start with Hello Week Award”. Sandy Hook Promise (SHP), which is a school violence prevention organization, launched the awards in tandem with the larger Start With Hello Week national campaign to recognize school efforts to prevent bullying and violence.

SHP selected JAMS from hundreds of submissions across the country. Start With Hello (SWH) is a program designed to help students break the ice, overcome social barriers, and get to know one another in order to create and sustain an inclusive culture and school community.

Congratulations to all JAMS students and staff that made this accomplishment a reality. You make our community proud!
